My Internship at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Pre-School
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School is a Catholic school. It teaches the students not only the common subjects but also religion. I mainly worked with the pre school. My role was to observe the students to understand more about child development. Each day I was to write a reflection on the day and wrote what was one main interaction that taught me a lesson. Then, I would have a conversation about it with my mentor and the other teacher that works there. These conversations really helped me get more insight about the situation and had me understand more. I was responsible for working on my project most of the time and also watching the students.
My project was to put together a portfolio of the work for each student. Each portfolio consists of the work that the students have made throughout the year. My mentor does this project every year for her students so they would have something to take home on the last day of school. Since she had me as an intern, I took that workload off of her because it takes a lot of time to put all the work together. The work came batch after batch because my mentor had to choose which work should go into the portfolios. It helped that my mentor had the work filed for each student so I just had to work on each portfolio student by student.
During internship, the skills that I have used are working diligently, organization, and communication skills. I had to be working diligently to ensure my work gets done for the day. I had to be organized to work on my project because I had to keep each students work in order and be sure that no one's work got put into another portfolio. I had used my communication skills like speaking and listening to ensure that my mentor and I understand each other and what we are doing at the moment. Some skills that I have learned is to be more observant with the students because a lot can happen in under a minute that I look away. Being observant can lead me to understanding situations better if anything happens. Another skill I have gained is to communicate more often because I won’t get across what I want or question about if I don’t. I still am working on this skill because I have realized that I am not fully comfortable in doing this; I believe it is because I don’t speak up often to express my feelings towards situations. It is important to communicate with my mentor and other colleagues because if I were to stay quiet and not speak up then I wouldn’t have learned to my full potential.
I believe that my experience at internship was pretty great. I learn a ton of information about child development. I now know a little more about why children act the way they do and how to treat them so they can grow to their full potential. The experience has given me more of an idea of what I want to do in life because I found an interest in learning about children. I might not want to be a teacher necessarily but maybe something similar to that.
*I do not have any photos from my internship due to the privacy of children.
