Dia De Los Muertos Altar
My class learned about Dia de los Muertos. We learned about the Mexican traditions they had for the celebration, what the meaning of the celebration is and how to make an altar and what offerings to put on the altar. I learned a lot about this Mexican tradition compared to the little knowledge I had of it before. The project we had to do is to make our own altar for someone in our family or someone that we cared about that has passed away. For my altar, I chose my grandpa. The altars we made were shoebox sized instead of a regular Dia de los Muertos altar which are usually three times that size or even bigger. On the altar we included traditional Mexican offerings like cempazuchitl (yellow marigolds), papel picado, incense, skulls, pan de muertos, and many more. We also included oferendas on the altars which are things the person likes. For the project, many of us hand made the objects that are on the altars. For example, most of us made the cempazuchitl out of tissue paper and we made many objects like skulls and pan de muertos out of clay. Making the objects was kind of a learning and creative process for me because I had to get creative with what I want my altar to look like so it can stand out. For me, the learning part of the project was pretty easy because I just had to listen to what was being taught and apply it to my altar. One of the hardest parts of making the altar was finding the time to make the objects to put on and also preparing for the presentation part of the project. It was hard finding time to make stuff since there was so many components to add I and so little time because the materials I needed was at school. Overall, the project was a fun experience for me since I had never made an altar for Dia de los Muertos before.
