Ethnics and Immigration
This semester, we learned about philosophy of ethnics by reading sections of Michael Sandel's book, Justice. We mainly analyzed his texts that he wrote on the philosophies of utilitarianism, libertarianism, deontology, and egalitarianism. We read Sandel's texts, then, we wrote argumentative essays (as displayed below), and discussed in seminars about them. For our argumentative essays, we were given prompts to choose from and then we had to argue for what is just using a philosophy that we were studying during that time. The essays consists of five paragraphs which were a introductory paragraph, two claim paragraphs, one counter-claim paragraph, and a conclusion paragraph. With each essay we had to support our thesis with concepts from the philosophy and quotes from Sandel's texts. We also practiced habits of mind which are question, claim, evidence, reasoning, and connection. In seminars, we used the habits of mind to discuss about the text and go over big and small questions we had on it to help us understand the text more. Also, after we went over concepts a philosophy has, we had to bring in objects that helped represent a concept. These objects we brought in, got to be our altar items for the Day of the Dead altars we made for our Salon Night Exhibition.
